Three men rescued from Delaware Bay

From Press staff reports, The Press of Atlantic City, May 9th, 2005

DELAWARE BAY: - A good Samaritan rescued three men Sunday after their small boat overturned in the bay, Coast Guard officials said.

According to a Coast Guard report, the Coast Guard was notified at 10 a.m. that a 21-foot motorized pleasure craft had capsized in the waters between Cape May and Delaware.

But before a Coast Guard boat from Coast Guard Station Fortescue arrived, the operator of a boat called Young Guns (Marc Priest) collected the men from the water. A helicopter from Coast Guard Station Atlantic City was also called to the scene.

Coast Guard officials said the men were in the water about 10 to 15 minutes.

They were transferred from Young Guns to the 21-foot Coast Guard boat and taken to Bowers Beach in Delaware.

Local emergency crews treated them at the scene for mild hypothermia and they were released, Coast Guard officials said.

The names of the men or their rescuers were not available. The boat was towed from the scene.

In Marc Priest’s words:
“We were fishing our striper tournament on Sunday and were out about 15-18 miles across the Delaware Bay. We were anchored up for a couple of hours but didn’t catch anything so we decided to find another spot. While heading to our next spot, we noticed someone waving a jacket over their heads off in the distance. We headed over to check it out and as we got closer, there were three men hanging on to the hull of their boat that had capsized while anchored up from taking waves over the stern. One of the guys had uncontrollabe shaking from hypothermia. We threw float cushions with rope and got him into the boat first. We stripped him of wet clothes and got our survival gear on him and put him in the cabin while getting the other two guys in the boat. The coast guard met us out there and we transferred the victims to their boat. The guys boat had overturned between 8:30 and 9:00 am while fighting a large fish. They were there for over an hour before we found them—the ten to fifteen minutes noted in the article was how long it took the coast guard to get there after we called it in. It was pretty intense—the guys were all fine after being re-warmed. The worst guys temp was 80 degrees F when they got him to land. The scariest part was that there were other boats all around them—just not close enough to be able to tell what was going on.”
